General: About Writing An Abstract
An abstract is a summary of a larger project (i.e. a thesis, research project, etc.) that content describes the goal and scope of the project, conclusions or intended results. They should follow an “Introduction,” “Body,” “Conclusion” structure (like an essay), but do not need to be written in an overly academic tone.
Sometimes they are divided into several sections, such as “Motivation,” “Problem Statement,” “Approach,” “Conclusion,” etc. (This is optional.)
Below are some examples of Abstracts (both graduate and undergraduate design projects).
A few Examples of Abstracts:
CAI to EWR is a project about a journey that starts from Cairo International Airport to Newark Liberty International Airport with a connection through Paris Charles De Gaulle Airport within the span of twenty-four hours. During this journey, I interviewed different people I met on my trip and recorded abstract sounds that represented the environment at a specific place and point in time. Each Medium is reflecting the journey in a different way. The interactive book, focuses on telling the story through the voices of people I met and it visualizes certain moments. It is made in a form of a timeline and depending on where the interview took place, the elevation of the map and the page itself changes throughout the book. The poster series which emphasizes quotes of the people and some of the announcements you hear while traveling through airports. Their placement depends on when and where the interview or the announcement took place on the map. The motion piece utilizes the soundscape of the journey to underscore the constant activity going on around you when you are traveling.

Cache Me If You Can is the story of scavenger hunting for 24 caches within 24 hours in NYC. The hunt was divided into three separate days that amounted to 24 hours, in which we attempted to find as many caches as possible. In addition, each day is focused on a certain area of Manhattan consisting of the Midtown, Downtown, and Central Park sections. Every single cache is unique because they come in different shapes and sizes with various personal items within it that people leave behind. The most challenging aspect is finding these caches that are cleverly hidden in plain sight. The designed mediums show glimpses of our scavenger hunting experience, ranging from a large overall scope to a more personal detailed perspective. The large map displays the overall experience showing the location of all the caches that were found as well as not found. The ten smaller maps display some of the steps taken in order to find the cache, and its contents inside it. The poster series made in collage form showcases images and typography that focus in on the key points of some individual caches. Lastly, the book provides a more personalized touch, as it includes our own personal notes and thoughts during our hunting experience.

Did you know 55% of the worlds population reside in urban areas, living on 3% of the land, using 75% of its resources?
During the 2020 pandemic, it became evidently clear the effects humans have on the environment. One of the few positive outcomes has been that many people have become more conscious of their carbon footprints. Greenhouse gas emissions have plunged due to the rapid decline in travel and economic activity, with less people commuting to work, and a decrease in air travel.
Human and natural systems are tightly intertwined and come together in cities. The goal of SUSTAINABIL(C)ITY is to encourage citizen engagement and involvement, with emphasis on educating urban communities on the importance of changing their habits, understanding sustainability, and how they can apply it in their daily lives.

Although the internet has been an invaluable technological tool throughout the course of the pandemic — acting as a tool of connection, education, and provide a sense of normalcy — it has become apparent that the longer we stay connected to our devices and social media outlets, the more disconnected we become to reality. There is a blurred line appearing between us and the mobile apps we use on a daily basis, with our consumption growing greater by the day.
More explicitly, Social Media, which has made it possible to connect with the world, filled the void of what was lost at the hands of quarantine, seen most during the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic that required us to isolate and practice social distancing. And with the lack of human interaction, the gravitation towards digital platforms took over. And while the use of social media can be beneficial, their use presents underlying systemic exploitation — invasions of privacy for example — that seems incalculable, and therefore not often scrutinized.
Dis(connected) will help people see it clearly.

Cyberpunk is a sub-genre of science fiction in a dystopian futuristic setting with the main focus being a combination of lowlife and high tech, featuring futuristic technological and scientific achievements, such as A.I. and cybernetics, juxtaposed with societal collapse or decay. The word cyberpunk was coined by writer Bruce Bethke, who wrote a story with that title in 1982. He derived the term from the words cybernetics, the science of replacing human functions with computerized ones, and punk, the cacophonous music and nihilistic sensibility that developed in the youth culture during the 1970s and ’80s. The roots of cyberpunk extend past Bethke’s tale to the technological fiction of the 1940s and ’50s, to the writings of Samuel R. Delany and others who took up themes of alienation in a high-tech future, and to the criticism of Bruce Sterling, who in the 1970s called for science fiction that ad-
dressed the social and scientific concerns of the day. Cyberpunk can be found in many mediums like film/television, books, comics, gaming, music, and fashion. Some examples are Blade Runner, Black Mirror, RoboCop, Terminator, and so many more. This editorial focuses on the portrayal of cyberpunk within the gaming media. It presents how cyberpunk is portrayed the way it is and the purpose of the details within these societies. Gaming offers a deep perspective on the artistry and visual representation of a genre and this editorial presents an analysis of characteristic games, their story plots and structures. As a gamer myself, I love to explore the possibilities of what the future holds as I explore these gaming universes myself. People love to fantasize about the future because of the possibilities it can hold, and as these worlds are created with many different outcomes, it gives people the thrill of controlled possibilities.

The message of sports for decades has been that, sports is one of the activities where everyone
can unite and be equal, irrespective of their race, gender, or social status with the goal to compete
and have fun. This statement depicts a blurred truth most evidently seen in the fabric of US youth
soccer. In fact, serving as an indicator, US soccer was recorded to be a $2.2 billion dollar industry
back in 2010, with US youth soccer accounting for just over $8 million. Today it’s estimated to be a
whopping $17.7 billion dollar industry.
While we can take a look back and acknowledge that aspect of the sport’s remarkable economic growth, we must also reflect on the notion that US youth soccer for decades has been anything but equal to its participants. Competitive US youth soccer has only been accessible to groups that possess certain privileges which will be explored in this editorial. The intricacies encompassing this issue will be analyzed through meritocracy, race, and gender. By the end of this editorial the goal is to inform and promote
conversations. With these conversations the hope is to create change towards accessibility in the sport
for all those who wish to participate.
