If done right, it does double duty. It reinforces what your brand stands for and creates an instant, almost involuntary connection with the people encountering it for the first time. Get it wrong, and every piece of identity work that follows has to work twice as hard to make up for it.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Naming is deceptively hard because it looks like wordplay but functions like strategy. Before you generate a single name, you need to know what that name is being asked to do.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">During these brainstorming exercises:<br \/>\n\/ determine what your name needs to accomplish<br \/>\n\/ decide how it will work with an existing product, service, belief, activity, or skill<br \/>\n\/ determine what kind of name to develop: descriptive, invented, expressive&#8230;<br \/>\n\/ develop objective criteria to evaluate the names you generate<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>Types of Names<\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>Descriptive<\/strong><br \/>\nTells you <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">literally<\/span> what it does or offers. Low risk, low memorability, but very fast to understand.<br \/>\n<em>Examples: General Motors, The Container Store, Whole Foods<\/em><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>Invented (Coined)<\/strong><br \/>\nA word made up from scratch, often built from Latin\/Greek roots or pure sound. <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Fully ownable<\/span>, but requires marketing investment to give it meaning.<br \/>\n<em>Examples: Kodak, Xerox, H\u00e4agen-Dazs<\/em><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>Expressive (Suggestive)<\/strong><br \/>\n<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Hints at a benefit<\/span>, feeling, or attribute without spelling it out directly. Room for interpretation and story.<br \/>\n<em>Examples: Nike (Greek goddess of victory), Amazon (vast, endless), Dove<\/em><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>Evocative<\/strong><br \/>\n<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Draws on an existing word or concept<\/span>, often metaphorical,\u00a0 and asks the audience to make the leap.<br \/>\n<em>Examples: Apple, Shell, Patagonia<\/em><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>Founder\/Real Name<\/strong><br \/>\nUses a person&#8217;s name to <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">lend authenticity<\/span>, heritage, or personal accountability to the brand.<br \/>\n<em>Examples: Ben &amp; Jerry&#8217;s, McDonald&#8217;s, Trader Joe&#8217;s<\/em><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>Acronym\/Initialism<\/strong><br \/>\n<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Compresses a longer descriptive name into letters<\/span>\u2014practical, but can feel cold or interchangeable if not paired with strong visual identity.<br \/>\n<em>Examples: IBM, NASA, H&amp;M<\/em><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>Experiential<\/strong><br \/>\n<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Built around an action, ritual, or feeling<\/span> the brand creates rather than what it sells.<br \/>\n<em>Examples: Uber (the idea of &#8220;on-demand&#8221;), Airbnb, Spotify<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/acmgd.info\/gd3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/260910_EricNg_RU_GDIII_Lecture_3_Naming.pdf\">260910_EricNg_RU_GDIII_Lecture_3_Naming<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>NAMING: Brainstorming Exercises A name is the seed your brand grows from.
