Civic infrastructure is the physical places, systems, resources, and relationships that support how a community functions and how people experience, participate in, and shape public life.<\/strong><\/p>\n

It includes obvious physical infrastructure\u2014libraries, parks, schools, streets, transportation, recreation centers, and public spaces\u2014but it also includes the social and cultural systems that give those places meaning and make them work.<\/p>\n

Public art can be part of civic infrastructure because it can shape how people experience a place, whose stories are visible, how communities identify themselves, and how people connect to one another and to their city.<\/p>\n

Public art is experienced by people\u2014but not everyone experiences a place, an image, or a story in the same way.<\/p>\n

As designers, we need to pay attention not only to what we see, but also to who is doing the seeing.<\/p>\n

Take a few minutes to think about your own perspective.<\/p>\n

You don’t need to share anything personal that you don’t want to share. The goal is simply to begin thinking about how our experiences, identities, and relationships to place shape what we notice and value.<\/p>\n

Think about what you tend to notice first.<\/p>\n

Who is represented?
\nWhose stories are visible?
\nWho seems to be the audience?
\nWhere is the work located?
\nWhat makes a public artwork feel successful\u2014or unsuccessful?<\/p>\n

03 \u2014 THE WHO THING…<\/strong><\/p>\n

Who gets to decide what stories, people, histories, and ideas are represented in public space?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Consider:<\/p>\n

\/ Who creates public art?
\n\/ Who commissions it?
\n\/ Who funds it?
\n\/ Who maintains it?
\n\/ Who is represented?
\n\/ Who is missing?
\n\/ Who gets to experience it?
\n\/ Who gets to decide what belongs in a public space?<\/p>\n

Then ask yourself:
\nHow might my own identity, experiences, or relationship to place shape what I notice, value, or question?<\/p>\n

04 \u2014 AS A DESIGNER…<\/strong><\/p>\n
